ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

Delving into the world of additive manufacturing, I explored many different 3d printing materials and methods available today. I also explored my techniques in CAD to manufacture of 3d printing, and learned about the advantages and disadvantages of different materials for different applications. My research included testing the material strength and the best methods of Filament Deposit Modeling (FDM) printing on textiles.

BRIDGE

We designed our bridge using Fusion 360’s Generative Design feature. The bridge featured tongue and groove connectors to connect the three parts (split into 3 as to fit the bed plate). I wanted to conduct this test to see how the shape would come out and where the stresses would be once the FEA analysis as conducted. The FEA analysis showed that the majority of the stressors occur in the middle plate, where the washer is as well as the two bottom points of the inner triangle and the bottom of the bridge.

It withstood up to 855 N of force until it broke, and weighed a total of 167.1 g. It had a gyroid infil of 10% on the outer pieces and 12 in the middle. If I were to repeat this experiment, I would us a better press fit element than the peg holes to sustain the bridge, as well as increase the density in the points that were under more stress.

FDM PRINTING ON TEXTILES

We conducted a series of tests to see how different 3dprinting materials would adhere to fabric, and what conditions best fist these materials. We condensed and conglomerate our findings in this coffee table style magazine linked below.

I aided in the designing and testing of the materials in this magazine.
